MOTOACTV – my first sports watch

Thursday, January 12th, 2012

I was thinking for while about buying GPS-enabled cycling computer and Garmin Enge 500 was my favorite. I wanted to try my routes and connect other sensors via ANT+. Obviously Garmin device provides all these features. I can connect cadence and heart rate sensors. I can even upload it to my Bodymedia Activity Manager via Garmin Connect. Then few weeks ago Motorola revealed MOTOACTV device, Android based sports watch with music player. Moreover it has ANT+ and Bluetooth LE so potentially I can use more accessories than with Edge 500. It also has WiFi and FM Radio. Apparently you can also root the device and install some other Android apps. I guess these two devices are hard to compare. Edge is truly cycling computer while Motoactv is a hybrid. I decided to get Motoactv cause it can be used for other activities beside cycling and in theory I can expand it by installing additional apps in future.

MOTOACTV
I got it yesterday and it was pretty easy to setup. If you want to use WiFi you have to install desktop software in order to add networks (you cannot type passwords on this device). I tried desktop software on Windows and OS X and functionality is similar. I charged it for couple hours as directed before I tried it outside. I must say that GPS lock is instant in comparison to my Palm Pre+ which quite often cannot sync at all. I guess it is what you get when you got GPS integrated with a phone receiver. What I liked Motoactv is auto start/stop workout feature. It automatically sense that device is not moving and suspends logging data until you start moving again. I was not always sure about my average speed provided by SmartRunner app on my phone cause it kept logging even if I stopped. I hope it will be possible to install Android version of this app on Motoactv some day to compare. After you are done with you workout you may upload data to tracking website. You might do it wirelessly with WiFi or connect to the desktop with USB. Wireless option is great when you do not have your computer with you but still want to upload and see results. I would probably need ANT+ USB stick if I chose Garmin. I am still waiting for delivery of heart rate monitor to see how ANT+ integration works.

Slow-carb diet – Day 1

Monday, January 10th, 2011

Today I started my slow-carb diet, which is based on eating foods with a low-glycemic index. Foods with a low GI break down glucose in your body slowly, keeping your blood sugar levels constant throughout the day. I have to avoid all bread, rice (including brown), cereal, potatoes, pasta, tortillas, and fried food with breading. I can eat as much as I want of the following foods: proteins (lean meats, poultry, fish, eggs, and cottage cheese); vegetables (except white potatoes); legumes (peas, lentils, beans, and nuts); and healthy fats (fish oil, saturated fat, olive oil and flax seed). Unfortunately also fruits and juices are also out unless you’re doing so within 30 minutes after a workout.

My initial parameters:

Weight 220
Body Fat 30.5%
BMI 27.5
Biceps
Left 13
Right 14
Waist 40
Hips 40
Leg
Left 22.5
Right 21
Total Inches 150.5

Hopefully weather will improve. My morning rides are not very pleasant. It was not coldest day of this year but for it was in low 40s.

Palm Pre+ GPS issues update

Monday, August 9th, 2010

For a while I was not able to use GPS hardware on my Palm Pre+. Some people suggested that it might be crippled by Verizon since they want to sell subscriptions for their GPS software – Verizon Navigator. I read reports claiming that when you start Navigator first, GPS working in other apps auto-magically. This thing was probably inspiration for writing a small app called GPS Fix. GPS Fix is designed to wake your GPS, then keep it alive by continually pinging it at a set interval. I got following recipe to make possible to use SmartRunner to track my cycling rides.

  1. Start GPS Fix and enable it
  2. Call Verizon Navigator from GPS Fix and wait until it will ask you to purchase this app.
  3. Start SmartRunner.
  4. Wait. I figured out that it takes a while to sync with satellites. Unlike my PhotoTrackr device it cannot really sync when I am moving. That was always problem cause I am used to start and let it sync while I am riding. This is not working with GPS hardware from Pre+. Once you are synced you can start tracking in SmartRunner and GPS Fix will keep pinging hardware to make sure it will be running.

Short route from work to home

Wednesday, August 4th, 2010

I moved from Cupertino to Mountain View and my daily commute has been reduced by few miles. It used to be 9 miles one way. Now it is only 3.6 miles if I go straight so I have to find longer route. Unfortunately part of it is now resurfaced so I am taking short way to work and back.

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008

The push-up is the ultimate barometer of fitness. It tests the whole body, engaging muscle groups in the arms, chest, abdomen, hips, and legs. Web site One Hundred Push Ups details a training plan for going from 0 to 100 push-ups in a matter of six weeks.

Keep Your Muscles Healthy, Not Big

Tuesday, May 13th, 2008

The New York Times’ Well section has reassuring news for anyone hitting the gym and not seeing results. Many researchers agree that muscle size and definition are not as important to your long-term health as those muscles’ endurance and strength, which prevent atrophy and weakness in old age.
